    Diabetic retinopathy is a microvascular complication of diabetes. Optimal
    blood glucose control in diabetic patients reduces the long-term risks of
    microvascular damage. Long-standing uncontrolled diabetes leads to
    microvascular damage including damage to the retina. Diabetic retinopathy
    may cause permanent opacity of the vitreous humour and eventually blindness
    may result.
