Meet Dr (Mrs) Ukamaka Okafor, Our July Personality

Dr (Mrs) Ukamaka Okafor is the director, Education and Training, Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN). She is a public health consultant, researcher, author, editor, community development worker and a compassionate leader.

Born in St Luke’s Hospital – Anua, Akwa Ibom State, on 28 February 1965, Okafor is a native of Ozubulu in Anambra State. She attended Girls’ Secondary School, Ozubulu where she finished with distinction in 1982. Thereafter, she proceeded to study Pharmacy at University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and graduated with a Second Class Honours (Upper Division) degree in 1988.

After her one year mandatory internship training at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Enugu, Okafor was posted to General Hospital, Lagos, for the National Youth Service Scheme (NYSC) in 1989. On completion of her NYSC programme, she practised in community pharmacy for a few years before joining the PCN in October 2001. She subsequently rose to the position of a director in January 2013.

Okafor holds a PhD in Public Health; a postgraduate diploma in Industrial Pharmacy Advanced Training and Health System Management; as well as certificates in Supply Chain Management from various prestigious institution. She is currently rounding off her master’s degree programme in Biotechnology Innovation and Regulatory Sciences from Purdue University.  She is also a certified researcher with the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative and African Malaria Network.

Okafor has received various grants, fellowships and awards of meritorious service and excellence both locally and internationally. In September 2005, she emerged the second prize winner of the prestigious award of Excellence In Research competition, organised by the Community Pharmacy Section of the International Federation of Pharmacists (FIP) based in Hague, Netherlands.

A regular paper presenter at the FIP congresses since 2005, Okafor was editor-in-chief of African Pharmacists, a newsletter of the African Pharmaceutical Forum of the FIP (2008—2012). She is also a Fellow of the West African Postgraduate College of Pharmacists where she serves  as a part time lecturer in the Faculty of Public Health.

Pharm. (Dr) Ukamaka Okafor is married and blessed with children.
